Teach them well.

I have always been the kind of person that wanted to be helpful. I mean, really helpful, kind of like a helpy helperton?. Shooting has given me the opportunity to teach people how to safely shoot guns and increase their overall enjoyment of the shooting sports. I take this responsibility very seriously and I am honored to help in any way I can. I was involved in a shooting demo this past weekend that involved introducing kids to rimfire target shooting at an indoor range.

The kids I taught this weekend had little to no time behind a trigger, but were very eager to learn. I always go over the gun safety rules and never let them handle a gun until I know they are ready. Most kids listen very intently and seem to soak up knowledge like a sponge. Sometimes I wonder if it’s the fact that I am close to their age so they aren’t as intimidated as when they’re be taught by an adult. I was able to help several young girls this weekend take their first shots, one was actually there on her birthday.  It made me smile as her mom went and bought more boxes of ammo so we could keep shooting together.

I believe that kids that understand gun safety are so much better off than kids that don’t. I was taught from a young age to respect firearms. A kid that understands what a gun can do are far less likely to use a gun improperly.  Parents NEED to discuss gun safety with their kids often and start at a young age! I’ve kind of gotten off track……

Anyway, I feel like part of my job as a sponsored shooter is to be a good ambassador and also pass on knowledge to people that ask. I know there are some shooters that don’t want to show anyone their “secret” to fast and accurate shooting. That’s crazy!! The more kids we get involved now will help to insure that the Second Amendment lives on forever. I would encourage everyone to teach your kids, grandkids, and friends kids how to shoot and shoot safely. Nothing makes me happier than to see a youngster that I helped introduce to shooting, shooting in a match. Remember to have fun at the range and don’t get annoyed if their attention starts to drift. Sometimes, I get a little silly at the range. (Evidence below)

Stay safe and shoot straight!!!

I hope to see you at the range.
